Blog Exercises

1- Lenses theory and Medium distinctions. Lens operation, characteristics and depth of field.
Wide angle : The frame is very large, with that lense (16mm) we can see almost everything around the composition. That means that the composition can't be really revealed because there are other things around (the set, walls, ground...). That kind of lense is good to shoot the atmosphere of the whole place.
Normal : The normal lense is a 50mm, it's closed to the human vision. That lense is good to show what the character see because it's closer to his own vision. The frame is interesting because all the composition is inside. We can see everything, because I was far enough from the composition (obviously, I stayed at the same place to take the pictures with the different lenses).
Teleobjective : I have a 55-200mm lense, so I tried only the 55mm one because a bigger zoom is useless in a room, that kind of lense is good to be used in a gig, or outside. But, for that work, I tried with the 55mm one and it was ok, not so blurred, but very framed, good to take some very small details of the composition.

7. Sequence of stills with mixed audio track
For the Radar festival I worked on a video for The Kills which was a stop motion video with stills images, with repetitions, rewinds & co. I will work on these pictures and edit it again, choosing 12 images, a new soundtrack and a diegetic sound.

Back to France...

Well,
the 1st term is finished, and I'm back home (herr, my parents' home I mean, I consider ,now, my life based in England, definitely). It's strange, because I didn't pay attention that the time could be so fast, I remember when I'm arrived in october, it's just like if it was yesterday.
I suppose there's some consequences on my work, the rythm of the school is sooo different to my formar school ( about 36hours/week ), this is probably why I feel I didn't achieve a lot of work, and it's really hard to adapt to this new method of work. I'm not feel satisfied of my work, I think it could be better. I hope I will work harder for the 2d term ( and not be attracted by the amazing life in uk, my photograph and music video work !! )...

I promised to Jools to bring an absolutely expensive present from France... I will try.

Online Advertising : Six Feet Under.

I have choosen to work on the season 5 dvd's release of the famous serie Six Feet Under.
I hesitated a lot before starting my banner about which kind of banner could be appropriate and original for a serie announcement.
Then I decided to work on a viral calendar ( step by step) because it's a good way to generate a buzz. The first event of this calendar could start with a simple banner, like the one that I have done. Then another one, with the trailer, and finally, a miniwebsite.
But to be very efficient, a viral calendar must be very singular, unique and original, that's the more difficult! It must be attractive and interactive, it's a good way to cause curiosity to the net surfer.
I started my banner by first taking the pictures of Six Feet Under on the web, finding the more relevant for my concept. I just wanted to have a picture with all the actors, for the end of the banner, and also a picture of the season 5, the dvd cover.
Then, I went to a cemetary to take pictures of the tombs, the crows and the vaults. It was interesting because British cemetaries are so different from the French ones, here, they are creepy, authentics and they perfectly match with the cliché of the horror films.
So I have work on my pictures, creating a lot of layers, with transparent background which will be used for my animation on flash. The differents kind of layers that I used are : the background, the landscape, the sky, the tombs and the crows.
At the end of the animation there is a transition with the cemetary universe and the presentation of the new dvd.
The technical aspects of my animation are actually very simple, like motion, mask, guides, alpha. As it was a simple banner I was not obliged to use javascript. But it would be possible and probably better to use it, because it would be an interactive banner, then more interesting for the user. I think if had more time and knew more javascript I would have done an interactive expanded banner. I know how to do that, but only without an animation inside!
So, the guiding principle of my banner uses some kind of horizontal slides with all the layers, except for the crows, I put a motion guide to make seems them flying in the sky.
I was inspired by the serie of online advertisement by DIESEL, they used this system and I found that very interesting and clever because it's very simple but effective!
Sometimes "less is more"!

Mise-en-scène seminar

How mise-en-scène elements work towards the themes of the film?
Visual style: I want to work on a kind of dark, saturated and blurred image to exaggerate the darkness of the main character, I also want to work on the visual transition, and playing with effects and the musical aspect of the script to direct it as a music video. I think it's a good way to mix my interests.
Actor blocking: I see the characters playing in a kind of triangle relationship, the compere toward the clown toward the audience, and oppositely. The clown could be in front of the audience, the compere hidden but observing the clown on the stage and the audience attitude.
Audio: I want the music to be diegetic (in a way), and use it like David Lynch in the scene of the theatre in Mulholland Drive, I want to trap the audience, to make them in trouble with the show of the clown, the reality, the way as it is visually directed... The music must be atmospheric, indirect, but for the real sounds, I want them diegetic, like in the music videos of Jonathan Glazer (Massive Attack : Karma Coma or Richard Ashcroft : Song for the Lovers), the real sounds are present, and they give more sense to the video.
Production: (editing?) I would like to play with the rythms and the beats, based on a music following the rythm of the script. Once based on the rythm of the music I want to work of the rythm of the video, with some slow shooting, and some fast ones (cf: J.Glazer/Radiohead : Street Spirit).
Camera: I want to work on differents way of filming by the frames (close up, a large view...), the speed, the point of view (from behind the characters, above , under...).

Though my mise-en-scène seems balanced or mixed, I think that the result will be what I am expecting for, I hope, I know what I want for this script, concerning the mise-en-scène. But I have to workmore on the psychological aspects, on the script itself.

Rehearsal : the 10 points plan.

ONE -Ideas of what is about and what it means forget personally .
The script shows us a depressed clown who has to work and entertain an audience but he can't succeed it, his problem is more important even if we don't know the back story, we can understand that his problem is over all the rest of his life and his work. We can understand there is a change in his life, and the show is the key, but he knows that he can't succeed it and he could turn into a nervous breakdown, in front of the audience, as if he was naked, showing his feelings, even if he has a mask...
We can see the loneliness of the character in front of the audience, the compere and the most important : his own life!

TWO - Scenes needs and life needs of all the characters. Sometimes referred to as the spines and transformations .
The life needs of the clown is that he's at a turning point in his life, he's going to have a nervous breakdown, on the scene. He seems to want or need a kind of recognition through his job, but in the same time he can't hide his feeling behind a mask. As a clown he shows himself to the audience even with a mask, but he can't make the audience feel unconfortable, but he did it. So the scene needs is closely linked to his life needs, the show could be a kind of outlet, to go through his demons, his fears and to transform it into a comic performance.
Concerning the compere, his life needs are to achieve a business, he's more obsessed by his reputation and the money he wins than his employee's feelings and problems. His scene needs is obviously worst than his life needs because he assists to the chaotic show of the clown and he understands there is a problem, for his night club, his reputation, and his money! He's just obsessed by the clown's performance and hopes he will try to save the show. Actually, as it's a failure, he just want to destroy him, the clown's problems don't matter anymore because he has ruined the reputation of the compere's club.

I have to modify the last 8 points...
Work in progress!
THREE - Each scene facts/images and questions it raises.
We can see in the first scene that it introduces the character and gives us the keys to know him, his feelings and his backstory.
And in the last one we have the result, the first scene could help us to know what will happen in the last scene, it's a kind of vicious circle but everything is worst and worst...

FOUR - What the scene is about its emotional event and how the scene fits the story graph of the script.
The first scene is about the presentation of the clown, to show the tragic face of the situation (thanks to the mask).
The second scene shows us the evolution of the situation, everything falls in, in a kind of apotheosis but deeply tragical!
The last scene is the result, everything is lost, he's definitely over.

FIVE - Possible character objectives and imaginative back story adjustments.
The clown objectives : to show unconsciously his nervous breakdown. A clown is supposed to represent happiness and entertain people, but for him it's the contrary!
That's linked to the compere attitude who expected him to be talentuous and not pathetic, because his work he's based on the success of the clown's performance.

SIX -The beats of the scenes its characterisation and action verbs ideas of how you might work on the beats.
The beginning : the audience doesn't know him yet, so people expected him to be a good clown, because they have paid for that. They are waiting for something funny until he says that he's here to entertain people, there is the first beat of the scene because wa have the reaction of the audience. Then we have the prayer. The second beat appeared when the prayer is personalized by the clown and because insane, the audience become sceptical and anxious. The last beat, the end, when he leaves the stage.

SEVEN - The scene reality and environment.
Tense, anxiety, stress, expecting for an successful performance, cruelty and no pity from the compere.

EIGHT - Research you have done and research you have left to do.
I have already work on the storyboard but n ot totally finished yet because I'm not really sure about some details. I have probably found the place to shot it, in an old and small cinema, I'm waiting for the confirmation. I have to find actors and I need also a technical crew!

NINE - Your plan of what you wish to accomplish.
My plan is to work on this script as if it is a music video, so I have to made some researches about visuals aspects (F.Sigismondi and G.Maddin) and I want to focus on visuals and sounds mainly, unreal and tragically magic. I also want to exaggerate the profiles of the characters, as if they weren't human, in a kind of another dimension.

TEN - A blocking diagram (this last one means you psychologically are prepared to throw away your storyboard).
I have every scene in my mind, I tried to translate it on my storyboard to be more accurate. Everything is clear for me, for the result mainly, I think I have to work on the way to direct actors and technical crew, it's the main problem that I have, so I will work on the seminar courseworks!

Holga Experiments

24x36 roll used in my Holga, a medium format camera.
My latest photographic experiment...

The Clown : References

Floria Sigismondi

She's a music video director from Toronto, she's my favourite one. I am really inspired by her work, and I want to work on my script as if it was a music video, more visually and choreographic.
I found a place to shoot it, but I need a confirmation, if it's ok it would be great and it would perfectly match with my ideas.
Here is an interview of her, about her creative process.

by Guy Maddin,
with Isabella Rossellini, Maria de Medeiros.

This film is a huge reference for me, for the visuals, the sounds, the anachronism...
I'm inspired by this film for my script of The Clown ( the world of entertainment, full of sadness and nostalgia).

The Kills video : Radar Festival

My Passion is Accurate.

Well, the deadline is supposed to be tomorrow, but I can send it until the 4.12.06. I dont know if I will finish on time, I hope so, really.

Tomorrow will be the shooting day (video + stop motion) and the montage (editing) on saturday, at home. Maybe some shooting on saturday morning, but I will need an actor I think, for the last scene. It will be the rush, but anyway, nothing is impossible as we say in French...

02/12/2006 : It's done! A music video shot in 1 hour and edited in 5 hours and it kills! I really like the result! Now I just have to cross my fingers for the contest!

Coursework : Online advertising.

We are required to produce an online advert.
It can be for the company, service or institution
of our choice. It can be static, animated and/or interactive. It can contain audio and film
footage if required.

I decided to work on a (interactive? animated? with video?) banner for the new season of Six Feet Under.
Here are some points that I want to follow:

  • a trailer
  • an interactive banner
  • a suggestive and incitative banner
  • implicite -- mystery, play with the references of the death universe... without the title of the serie.
  • define a specific universe, which is a reference of the serie (still without the title)
  • personification (?), the audience could appropriates the ad.

May be I will create a serie of ad, using a viral calendar ( just have a look: http://www.marketing-alternatif.com/ ).
Then, the concept of the mystery would work because of the 2 steps :
- the mystery > the video/trailer. + a link to a miniwebsite like the Hi-Res one.

Artistic identity- identifying your themes as a Director

1st Part:
The Self-Inventory

To resume the major experiences of an entire life seems impossible, endless and it's probably hard to decide which experience could be more important than another.
Finally, I wrote these words, they appeared easily with an incredible abundance which was very surprising.
Then I tried to organize them into groups and actually even if my experiences were differents, there is always a common link between them. So it was hard to organize it, because I really wanted to resume it, moreover these groups were a little bit similar. Finally, I decided to organize it as concepts more than feelings.
There are finally 4 mainly groups about my inventory :

  • The change : change life, country, language, being adult, differents love for each relationship.
  • Schizophrenia : lunatic, contradiction, opposite feelings about a same situation, private life & public life.
  • Creativity : a way to express yourself, the feeling of the achievement, self confidence.
  • Expectation : my future, what I really want, daydreamer, love.

After examination, and a lot of reflexion, what I can think about a work produced by someone who had been through these experiences would be to focus on fear about his own future and also the wish to excel. He must be optimistic and able to step back. Actually, I feel closed to this conclusion, even if I think that I am different, there is always a link between the character and me...

2nd Part:
Alter Egos

My six character from literature or fiction with whom I have a special affinity are mainly character from film, because I don't really know a lot the English litterature ( except Bret Easton Ellis, Hubert Selby Jr, moreover they are American...). I have a lot of references in the French litterature, but it is mainly contemporary litterature like Amelie Nothomb, Patrick Declerck.
I decided to choose my characters in the cinema field except the 1st one.

Patrick Bateman - from American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.
Seul Contre Tous - by Gaspard Noé (director of Irreversible).
Asia Argento - in Scarlett Diva by herself.
Tyler Durden - from Fight Club by David Fincher.
Ed Wood - by Tim Burton.
Rita - from Mulholland Drive by David Lynch.

And the six or eight characters from "reality" are mainly artists, they are a kind of a reference for me...
Floria Sigismondi - music video director.
Katie Jane Garside - Queen Adreena's singer.
Camille Rose Garcia - artist
Chloé Sevigny - actress.
Michel Gondry - music video director.
Harmony Korine - director.
Michael Pitt - actor.

The autoportrait would resume me as a provocative, subversive, imaginative, tabooless (?), odd and dark person.

To resume, I clearly identify what style of filmmaking the result suggests. It is obvious, after some observation, that my current work is very closed to that genre of filmmaking, it is probably thanks to my references, and I think that my references and the feelings which qualifies my experiences are very closed and similar, it is a kind of logical link. But I am afraid to be only focalized by this genre and not to be open to the others one, even if actually I am a filmgoer, and open minded about genres, my work could be clearly positionned. I will see... It is like the Clown script, I already have the image in my mind, I know what I want and actually there is a link with this exercise ( about the genre, the wish to create a music video...). To continue...

Seeing the story seminar: working the script.

I have to choose a film that I am interested in studying, so i decided to work on American Psycho directed by Mary Harron based on the novel of Bret Easton Ellis.

I was supposed to work on SexyBeast by Jonathan Glazer, but the only script that I have found was sooooo messy, I tried but it was very hard, so I decided to take this one because I really like Bret Easton Ellis.

This is the scene that I have choosen :

INT TEXARKANA - NIGHT A flashy new restaurant unremarkable in every way, except... where are all the people? This place feels deserted: the bar is empty and only five tables have people at them in the dining area.

PAUL OWEN sits alone in a booth near the back.

PATRICK approaches PAUL smiling, his hand extended...

PAUL (checking his Rolex) You're late.

PATRICK (laughing) Hey, I'm a child of divorce. Give me a break.

They shake hands as PATRICK sits down.

PAUL motions to a WAITER, silently ordering a round of drinks by pointing to his already empty martini glass.

PAUL This is really a beehive of, uh, activity, Halberstam.

PATRICK Listen, I tried making a reservation at Dorsia, but--

PAUL (interrupting) I know, I know. Forget it. They've got a twelve-month waiting list. Twelve months, can you believe it? For Christ sake, Stallone can't even get in there!

PATRICK I didn't hear about this.

PAUL Yeah. Last week... they turned away Rambo himself.

PATRICK Just... say... no. PAUL How've you been, Marcus?

PATRICK Great. Great... and you?

PAUL Terrific. Never better.

PATRICK Are you still handling the Fisher account?

PAUL Yeah. Lucked out, huh?

PATRICK How'd you get it?

PAUL Things just fell into place.

The WAITER reappears with the drinks...

PATRICK Wow... (beat; then) So how were the Bahamas? You just got back, right?

PAUL Well, Marcus, let me tell you -- travelers looking for that perfect vacation this summer may do well to look south, as far south as the Bahamas and the Caribbean islands. There are at least five smart reasons to visit the Caribbean...

DISSOLVE TO LATER

PAUL's martini is nearly gone... PATRICK's remains almost full.

PAUL (CONT'D) ...those who can't take a full week away will find the Caribbean an ideal spot for the alternative weekend escape.

PATRICK This is enlightening.

PAUL is just about completely shit-faced... he slams the rest of his drink in one huge, drunken gulp as the WAITER silently delivers him a fresh martini:

PAUL For the active vacationer there is mountain climbing, cave exploring, sailing, horseback riding, white- water river rafting...

DISSOLVE TO LATER

The entrees have been served: mostly uneaten, they remain beautiful works of culinary art. PAUL continues to pound down the martinis as quickly as they arrive...

PAUL (CONT'D) ...for those who wish to gamble, there are casinos on many of the islands. As for dining out, the islands have attracted numerous world class chefs - American, British, French, Italian... even Dutch expatriates own many of the restaurants.

PATRICK My life is a living hell... and there are many more people I, uh, want to... want to, well, I guess, murder.

PAUL What you need is a vacation, Halberstam. You and that beautiful lady of yours, what's her name?

PATRICK Cecelia, Paul. My girlfriend's name is Cecelia.

PAUL That's right. You and Cecelia should really think about... getting away.

PATRICK Where would you suggest? The Bahamas, perhaps?

PAUL (genuinely surprised by the idea) Why not? She'll love it. (beat; then) Do you golf, Marcus? The golf courses and tennis courts in the Bahamas are unlike anything you've ever seen. During the summer months, the pros at many of the resorts are made more available... PATRICK (V.O.) Paul Owen is so drunk by the time dinner is over that I (1) make him pay the check, which comes to over two hundred and fifty dollars, (2) make him admit what a dumb son-of-a-bitch he really is...

Seeing The Script Seminar: Working the script.

I decided to work on the following film : ALMOST FAMOUS by Cameron Crowe.

Write an outline. Present tense short story form concentrating on what the audience will see
and hear. It also summarizes dialogue.

The story deals with William, 11 years old, who thought he was 12, and a not pubes yet. His mother hide the truth (he had 2 years of advance), and suddenly all his life changes. His rock'n roll sister, 15 years old, left the house to follow her boyfriend to San Francisco. She gave to William all her records. Four years later, William studied journalism at school, and also sent a review to Creem Magazine, a rock magazine. He met the rock journalist who asked to interview Black Sabbath, as an assignment. He went to the concert, at the backstage door, but he was rejected, then he met the band Stillwater which let him enter in the arena, and meet all this crazy universe. In progress...

Write a premise. Couple of sentences that will summarize the underpinning ideas regarding the film’s dramatic structure and development. I.e the Godfather??

In progress...

Point of view.

What belief or outlook does the story seek to express?

The story seek to express that we have to believe in our dream, to be optimistic and to follow our instinct. The free will is a big topic in this film, even if it's wrong or right... The character, even if he was young, he had lived an unique experience, an unique adventure with rock'n roll's end. He had the feeling that he had to live this experience, he didn't listen to his mother's advice, and decided just to listen to himself, to be self confident.

From whom or what does this thematic concern emerge?

The thematic concern emerge from the fate, from the meetings, from the train of events, we can see that there is a part of luck, just like the character of Match Point by Woody Allen, luck can change your life, but you must know what you want! His passion, Rock'n roll music, will become his life, because of all this events .

What is the main character and what makes him or her important?

William is the main character of the story, and it's his own story which makes him important. All his happened events, made him the crucial point of the story, even if the leitmotiv is his will to live his passion. The most important is how does he live them.

Whose mind is doing most of the seeing?

The main character's one, William, the script describe his vision, and his discover of the Rock'n Roll universe.

What are the idiosyncrasies in the way they see?

This is the vision of a teenager, he's not an adult yet, the perception are differents in the same ways the william's actions, he's still a kid who wants to achieve his dream, this is probably the difference with an adult, because we don't have the same perception of the life, instead of the kid whi have lost all sense of fear about the adventure, it's just a like a dream.

What disparity is revealed between their world and that of others?

The vision of William is different form the adult's one, but he learn a lot about life, music as a way of life... He is a witness of this epoch, this is the reason why he is inside the story but still have an external point of view about the story of Rock'n roll, even if he know the band, and all the people who made this kind of music, because he is just a kid who made an article about the band's tour.
His mother's world, is a world of fear toward her son's adventure, but her daughter leave the house few years ago, and she doesn't want her son does the same, so she's touched by fear but she must have also enough confidence towards her son and let him does that he really wants. She is balanced. The Rock'n roll crew's world is an universe different from the "normal" people, they have the music as a way of life, with drugs, chicks, they live as nomad.
William is balanced between his mother world and the other one, the one he likes...

What is the function of a particular moment of subjective revelation?

To have aneutral point of view? Or, our point of view, as audience...

Script - The Clown

We have to choose a script, to work on it, to develop it, to direct it...
I have choosen The Clown because I really appreciate the structure, the visual aspects which can be very creative in relation of my will to made music videos (cf. Floria Sigismondi, Jonathan Glazer, Chris Cunningham and of course Michel Gondry) and to work on the sound aspect, because it seems very important in this script unlike the lighting. And finally, the last but not the least, the psychological aspect, very dark, deep and sensitive, a kind of a "tragicomedy" like the Commedia Dell'Arte.
These are the reasons why I decided to take The Clown, it is the most appropriated and I feel very closed to it, I hope I'm not wrong and everything will be ok!
